I am pleased every time I shoot with Nikon 1 V1

Nikon 1 V1 is already quite old camera but it is clearly the fastest focusing camera I own. And that is a big asset in many situations, especially with lively children. Another asset is the wider DoF the 1” sensor offers. That combined with a nice (and inexpensive) 18.5mm/1.8 lens (50mm equivalent) gives a perfect DoF/background blur compromise. Actually that lens produces quite nice bokeh and is very sharp wide open.

I think I would have sold my V1 if I had not got the 18.5mm prime. It is so good lens that I think everyone having Nikon 1 series camera should buy it. I promise it will open a new world for your Nikon 1 photography.

Here are two latest shots with my Nikon 1 V1 equipped with the 18.5mm prime. Both shot wide open (f/1.8).

Some nice in-camera B&Ws with X100 and GR

Sometimes it is so great to shoot B&W photos in-camera. The best thing in this approach is that you can see a B&W image through the viewfinder or LCD. It really helps you understand things in monochrome – helps you see the gradations, tones, shadows, and highlights. Yes, I know, it is JPEGs then but usually the results are quite rewarding actually.

I have used all my cameras in B&W mode but below are some examples shot with Fuji X100 and Ricoh GR.

X-Pro1 still delivers

I do not use my X-Pro1 often but every time I shoot with it I’ll get some nice shots. The camera is quite slow but it has nice user experience (as I stated also for my Leica Digilux 2 in an earlier post) which is very important for me when I am shooting. Of course Fuji X system has some very nice lenses to work with. I have the beautiful XF 35/1.4 which is still very competitive lens even if it was the first one introduced in X system. I also have the XF 18-55mm/2.8-4 zoom which is nice if you want to take only one lens with you. It has a moderate size and great image quality, and its IS helps especially in indoor shooting. Its 27-82mm equivalent range is very nice for general shooting situations.

Kaapo’s portrait below was shot with XF 35/1.4 prime and church interior was captured with the XF 18-55 zoom lens.

Few latest tele end shots with Digilux 2

I used my Leica Digilux 2 quite much during this summer and enjoyed a lot of its user experience and the files it produces. Below are few shots taken with the tele end (90mm equivalent) of its fantastic lens which has a fairly nice widest aperture (f/2.4) even in the tele setting.

Space, the final frontier

Space provided us lots of interesting happenings during this week. First, at Wednesday we enjoyed beautiful Aurora borealis (Northern lights; two photos of them at our place in the earlier post) and at Friday we were examining the progress of the solar eclipse at my work place as you can see from the shots below.

Sorry for the parallax error in the shot above.

Aurora borealis

Yesterday we had very nice Aurora borealis here and I tried to capture them with my Ricoh GR. The most difficult phase was to find out where I’ve put my light and cheap tripod! 🙂 I used f/2.8 and shutter speed of 8 secs for the shots below. I was quite pleased for the results as these were the first Northern lights I have photographed.

Tulips in B&W

I really love how these tulips look like in B&W. And high-contrast B&W is even better. Beautiful metallic shine combined with a coarse looks makes it. Why to always shoot flowers in colors?

13

Our border terrier Herkko got 13 years old today.

About a year ago we thought that we were going to loose him. He was in a very bad condition loosing lots of fur and his movements were slow and uncoordinated. Then our vet diagnosed Cushing’s syndrome which was causing all these bad things. Now Herkko has medication for Cushing’s and he is feeling much, much better. I think he will have many good years to come.
